Backing RingWill Backing Rings Be Sufficient?

For most basic applications backing rings will suffice when joining two pipes. Typically made from rubber, chrome, or some other metal alloy; when welding a connection a backing ring is placed between the two pipes. By properly placing a backing ring in a connection, not only are you creating a leak free connection but also properly aligning pipes and stronger connection.

Also known as an anti-extrusion ring or a backing ring, the most simple forms are:

  • Plain backing rings
  • Machine-welded rings
  • Gasket rings

You will find that backing rings are most commonly used in automotive, or basic construction piping systems for leak prevention.
