A coupling is a short length of pipe that connects two steel or copper pipes to form a straight and continuous run. Couplings usually contain a socket at one end, although some have a socket at both ends, which allows the pieces of piping systems to be joined. Stainless steel pipes need to be welded onto pipe couplings, while rigid pipe couplings made of brass or copper have to be soldered on, or brazed. Coupling is important in any application as it provides necessary continuity in a framework. However, despite their integral role in piping, many people do not know the difference between merchant and regular coupling. While these two types of coupling are very similar, they differ greatly in application and versatility. Merchant Coupling

They require welding to other pipes within the system to ensure an adequate seal.

Regular Coupling

Regular couplings are more versatile than their merchant counterparts and can be used in both low and high-pressure circumstances. They can be used to join pipes of different shapes and sizes and form a tight seal with the pipes. Because of this, they are best used in a wide range of plumbing and piping systems that rely on high-pressure transportation of materials.
