Pickled and Oiled Metal

First of all, what is pickled steel? Pickled steel is made through a treatment process that removes impurities and rust from the surface of the metal. This removes the debris from the material by destroying the oxide layer (or scale layer). To describe the steel, the material is dipped into a vat of pickled liquor. The pickling process often uses hydrochloric or sulfuric acids to remove the oxide layer. There are different advantages and disadvantages to using hydrochloric or sulfuric materials for the pickling process. Depending on the composition of the steel, the material might have to go through the pickling process again.

After the process, pickled steel can oxidize in high humidity and specific atmospheric conditions. As a result, pickled steel is often covered in a film of oil to prevent oxidation. The oiling process creates a shield that protects the metal from moisture and other contaminants. Although the oil layer needs to be removed for different processes, the steel gains a clean and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
